Be sure to look at ALL of the properties of the roof coating
when making your decision. Main considerations in selecting a roof coating are:
-Elasticity - The ability to stretch and mend - hence the
word elastomeric. When your coating can move with the temperature changes
to the roof, there is a resistance to cracking. Two-ply is always safer. Greater
elasticity is better when comparing and buying a roof covering.
-Tensile strength– The ability to hold together and avoid
breaking.
-Perm factor – Resistance to moisture passing through the covering.
A lower number shows greater moisture resistance lower is better.
-Moisture gain by weight – The ability to absorb vs. repels
water and protects the roof. You want a roof coating that prevents water
away from the roof, rather than absorb into the roofing material which can
accelerate aging and deterioration.
-Peel adhesion – The comparative ability of the coating
system to remain adhered to the roof surface under adverse conditions.
-Tear resistance – The higher the tear strength, the
greater resistance to withstand minor defects caused after installation.
